Best healthy snack ideas, foods you can eat in between meals

Healthy snack ideas that taste good and are good for you, try some of these instead of your regular snacks

There are lots of great healthy snacks to choose from, being healthy doesn’t mean you can't enjoy your food.

There are some good reasons for snacking, the main reason is, it keeps your digestive system ticking over which burns calories, having a snack first thing in the morning will kick start your digestive system improving your overall calorie burning rate, and eating snacks will deter you from eating large meals.

Large meals are bad for two main reasons

1 Filling your stomach up to maximum capacity can expand the size of your stomach, therefore giving you a belly over time, or cause bloating.

2 The other reason is when your stomach is full it doesn't break down your food as efficiently, which can also cause bloating and gas.

Healthy Snack ideas

  • Fruit

High in vitamins low in calories many different varieties and cheap to buy. Many fruits are high in fiber and help the digestive system, many are also high in vitamins A,C and E which will help prevent and fight illnesses.

  • Nuts

Nuts are a great source of protein, but they can be high in fat, and some are coated in sugar and salt, if you pick the healthier varieties they're a healthy snack food. Many nuts contain mono-saturated fat which help to keep your arteries clear.

  • Cereal

Not just restricted to breakfast, I eat cereal at any time. If you pick a cereal that has fruit and nuts, you're getting a great mix of fiber, vitamins and protein, plus more protein, calcium and vitamins A and B from the milk.

  • Yogurt

Make sure it's low fat and it can be a healthy low calorie snack. Yogurt has the good bacteria that can help keep a healthy digestive system, it also has a fair amount of protein, calcium and vitamin D.

  • Peanut Butter

Despite peanut butter being high in calories, it is also high in protein, it has less saturated fat than low fat spreads and more fiber. As long as you don't go crazy with it, it can help your body get the nutrients it needs.

  • Popcorn

Low calorie and high in fiber, just as long as it's not covered in salt or toffee, popcorn can be a great healthy snack food.

    Things to consider

There are plenty of healthy snack ideas out there, it's all about balance and having a greater awareness of what you eat and also when you eat it.

You don't have to cut out all the things you enjoy, I still eat chocolate, sweets and crisps (chips) on a regular basis, I have just found a way to manage my diet.

When you’re deciding what to eat, don't just think of the taste, think about giving your body all the nutrients it needs, are you getting enough protein, vitamins and so on, then reward yourself with a treat.
